  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

Digipak with a 32-page booklet of detailed notes written by the monks of Pluscarden about the interpretation, context and history of each track, together with the complete Latin texts and English translations for all the music on the disc.

    From the booklet:
    Track 6 - Sanctus V
The Sanctus of the Mass is sung after the Preface, and just before the Eucharistic Prayer, or Prayer of Consecration, through which bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. This hauntingly beautiful setting, set in the fourth mode, well expresses the composer’s sense of God’s majesty, even as the liturgy announces his coming presence in holiness and power. With the crowds of Hebrew children on Palm Sunday, the assembly responds to the arrival of Jesus by crying “Hosanna!”
There was a huge mediaeval repertoire of Ordinary Mass Chants, that is, those Chants which set the unvarying texts of the Mass. The Solesmes monks in the nineteenth century made their own selection from this vast store, which they then classified in standard sets: a classification which remains to this day in the Graduale Romanum. The Sanctus Chant sung here is thus assigned to “Mass V”.

    • Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

    • Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

about

Timeless chant from the monks of Pluscarden Abbey, the last medieval monastery in Britain.

"Fervent, disciplined and committed singing of a high order." - Latin Liturgy Journal

"The singing, united, flowing and deeply musical, does them full justice. The text of each, with translation, is provided in the accompanying booklet, together with comments on the history of its composition and its use over the centuries. Through the beauty of the chants presented, and the ease and resonance of the singing in the fine acoustic, this CD lifts us to another world." - Dame Margaret Truran
